The first workshop will broadly focus on issues of Governance in Eurasia. The workshop aims to recognize the interdisciplinary interactions in both a broad conceptualization of contemporary and historical perspectives within governance (i.e., state-society, family, economics, and cultural and social orders) at local, regional, and trans-international levels of interaction. The second workshop is a joint project between the SSRC and Princeton University and will focus on Russia/Eurasia in World Context: A Dialogue with Middle East Studies. It is the intent of this workshop to pose questions and discuss issues that cross physical and intellectual borders, seeking findings and solutions by asking what Russian/Eurasian studies can learn from Middle Eastern studies. Participants may challenge interpretive categories such as authoritarianism, empire and nationalism or transnational issues such as health, economic development or water/energy resources. Comparative approaches to religious, cultural, historical and social issues as well as examinations of the politicization of Eurasian and Middle Eastern scholarship are also welcome. Both workshops will bring together approximately 10 doctoral students and 5 faculty participants for two to three days of intensive and critical discussion of the students' dissertation projects, as well as larger theoretical and methodological issues. Graduate students in the social sciences and related humanities disciplines, at any stage in their dissertation project, are eligible to apply. Applicants will be asked to submit a five-page double-spaced statement outlining their dissertation project, CV, and one letter of recommendation. The dissertation application deadline is DECEMBER 12, 2003; for application procedures and other details please check the SSRC Eurasia Program website: http://ssrc.org/programs/eurasia/.
