Graduate School of East Asian Studies (GEAS), funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments, will admit 1. 1 Doctoral Candidate (scholarship) whose dissertation project focuses on East Asian Security. We offer a PhD scholarship of € 1365 €/month (plus 103 €/m research allowance). The fellowship will initially be granted for one year, and contingent upon a positive evaluation after each year of study, the fellowship will be extended for another year. The fellowship may be granted for a maximum of three years. Doctoral dissertations in EVF Working Group are expected to analyze the institutional environment of security in the East Asian region (China, Japan and/or Korea). Successful applicants will have an above average master’s degree in either area studies (Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies) or a relevant discipline (Political Science, International Relations, Security Studies, Economics, Law, History, Environmental Policy) with a focus on East Asia. The language of instruction is English. Successful candidates will also show proof of language skills in English (C1) as well as an East Asian Language (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) at a level of B2 (CEFR) or higher. DAAD Graduate School Scholarship Programme (GSSP): Application Deadline: November 30, 2015: http://www.geas.fu-berlin.de/application/daad_gssp/index.html GEAS is calling for applications for full scholarships for PhD students, which will be financed by the DAAD GSSP. GEAS is looking for highly motivated international applicants with excellent grades and a strong interest in institutional theory in East Asia to apply for a PhD in East Asian Studies. International candidates who have received their final exam (MA) more than 6 years ago and who have not resided in Germany in the last 15 months can apply. Candidates are selected in a multi-step process by GEAS and DAAD. The final selection and decisions are made by the DAAD. Successful candidates will be integrated into the general GEAS PhD training programme, starting in October 2016. Doctoral dissertations at GEAS are expected to analyze the institutional environment of social, political, cultural and economic actors in the East Asian region (China, Japan and/or Korea). All dissertation research at GEAS will be conducted in the context of the three interconnected research lenses of its academic profile: (1) the origin and change of institutions in East Asia, (2) the effects institutions have on processes related to globalization and modernization in East Asia on the side of governments, bureaucracies or business and individual life-styles or related preferences, and, finally, (3) the interdependencies of institutions in East Asia within and beyond its regional boundaries. Successful applicants will have an above average master’s degree in either area studies (Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies) or a discipline represented at the Graduate School (Political Science, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Business, Economics, Law, History, Cultural Studies, Humanities, Theatre Studies, Environmental Policy) with a focus on East Asia. For exceptionally talented B.A. students, FU Berlin offers the possibility of a “fast track” admission to Ph.D. programs. The language of instruction is English. Successful candidates will show proof of English (C1) and also show proof of language skills in an East Asian Language (Chinese, Japanese, or Korean) at a level of B2 (CEFR) or higher. In the application process, applicants must provide academic transcripts or other evidence of completion of regular coursework, a statement of academic interest, and two letters of recommendation. For all applicants, evidence of linguistic competence related to East Asia is required. Applicants will be required to provide evidence of language skills in at least one East Asian language at the level B2 or higher according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as well at the level C1 or higher in English. Applications will be reviewed by PIs of the GEAS. Based on their applications, candidates will be selected for a nomination to the final decision process of the DAAD. Nominated candidates will have to submit a completed application form with all supporting documents via the DAAD portal again.
