Dear colleagues, students and friends,
please find below a number of GEAS events taking place in June that may be of interest to you.
June 7th, 2022; Virtual Lecture Series: North Korean
defectors' account as a source of information: issues and controversies
Partner Event:
The KDIS-FUIKS Korea-Europe Center invites you to the 2022 online Special Lecture Series: How to understand North Korea with GEAS
Alumnus Hyuk Jung.
Documents are the main source of information for understanding
North Korea, even though they show us the official side. Defector’s account could be an alternative way of looking into the private side just after cross-checking the reliability. Data of international trade show us the foreign relationship of North Korea
with sets of numerical information.
The event will be taking place online via Webex and you register by following this link. June 13th, 2022; Info Talk: GEAS @FU International
Week 2022
We are giving an overview on our PhD Programs at
FU and talk about our international activities and recruitment.
Interested Students can join the Meeting Link on our website. June 17th, 2022; Graduate Schools Summer Party
This year, our summer party will be celebrated with
all graduate schools on 17 June 2022 in the garden of Hittorfstr. 18. All GEAS members, friends and colleagues are welcome.
There will be
drinks and a small
selection of Korean food provided, but everyone is invited to bring
their
favourite drinks, and something
for the barbecue, if you like!
June 23rd, 2022; Book Talk: Chris McMorran - Ryokan
Mobilizing Hospitality in Rural Japan
Joint event by GEAS and Institute of
Japanese Studies at FU Berlin. What does it take to produce one of Japan’s most relaxing spaces: the ryokan? In this talk, Chris McMorran shares the behind-the scenes work required to
keep a traditional Japanese inn running smoothly, from the daily tasks of cleaning, serving, and making guests feel at home, to the generational work of producing and training a suitable heir who can carry on the family business. He shares insights from nearly
two decades of research in and around Kurokawa Onsen (Kumamoto Prefecture), including a year spent welcoming guests, carrying luggage, scrubbing baths, cleaning rooms, washing dishes, and talking with co-workers and owners about their jobs, relationships,
concerns, and aspirations.
The event will be taking place
in presence
at the Graduate School Villa (former TOPOI), Hittorfstr. 18 (old building) 14195 Berlin, Lecture Room (010/011).
Please wear a medicinal mask during the lecture. Location info can be found on
our website.
