PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Social Sciences Directory recruits William (Bill) Modrow as Editor-in-Chief
The open access online publishing company Social Sciences Directory has taken an important step forward by completing the recruitment of Bill Modrow as its Editor-in-Chief. Bill is the University Librarian at Florida State University in Tallahassee and is also a published academic author, giving him valuable twin insights in to the practical benefits of Social Sciences Directory’s model. This is to provide a one stop shop of multi-disciplinary content that is easily and freely available.
Currently, Academics globally need to have their research published and submit it for free to a publisher, who edits the work and publishes it, but then sells it back to universities as a subscription which is often very highly priced. This means that the taxpayer pays twice – to fund the initial research and then to pay for the right to use it. The academic sector is reliant on publishing work in specific journals, which is at odds with students raised in the digital age and used to performing Google-style searches. Social Sciences Directory will instead charge the academic £100/$150 to cover editorial, peer review and production management costs, and the content will then be made freely available to view. As well as being much cheaper, it will be quicker to publish and allow authors to retain ownership of copyright.
Bill Modrow commented:
“The aspirations and vision of Social Sciences Directory are close to my own ideals on open access content and understanding of user behavior. The idea of a dynamic publication providing more access to scholarly research globally and making full use of technologies is great. I am excited at having the opportunity to keep contributing my energy and passion to those ideals.”
Dan Scott, founder and director of Social Sciences Directory, commented:
“We wanted a dynamic and ambitious Editor who shared our beliefs and could bring experience of the editorial process. Bill responded instantly and his enthusiasm came shining through. He will now help us with recruitment of a full Editorial Board, generating submissions, marketing and advocacy. Our greatest need now is to build awareness and support, to start receiving papers for submission and work towards our aim of launching the first Issue in July 2012.
I would like to welcome Bill and look forward to a close working relationship.”
