Dear Klaus,

It seems that for all intents and purposes the degree to which scientific knowledge can be considered to be a divisible or public good is limited by the reproducibility of its distribution media. Printed form inherently imposes access limitations, such as to scholarly journal issues, in addition to cost structures that are likely to be heavier than those for digital editions. While preprints can be costlessly reproduced and Open Access licensed, their hosting platforms will likely need sustainable financing models to enable their continued independent existence.

The most important journals in natural sciences are still paper printed and possess a much higher impact factor (for example ‘nature’ and related journals). Electronic publication / information exchange possesses its own characteristics which ae not necessary associated with quality. It opens doors of knowledge by closing doors of understanding.
