[IP-OA_Forum] Open Science NL awards grant for strengthening collaboration between Dutch university open access publishers to foster Diamond OA publishing

Sharing this fyi - good news from Netherlands University Presses

The Steering Board of Open Science NL has decided to award a €300,000 grant to the network of institutional open access publishers in the Netherlands, known as the Netherlands University Presses (NUPs). The aim of this funding is to strengthen collaboration, coordination, and knowledge-sharing within the network.

In recent years, the number of publishing initiatives at Dutch universities has grown significantly. These initiatives – often referred to as library-led publishing or new university presses – differ from profit-driven publishers by focusing entirely on open access, for example through the diamond open access model, and by being firmly embedded within the university structure. As a result, they are closely connected to the academic communities at their institutions. While most of these initiatives are still in their early stages, they have the potential to develop into a sustainable and innovative alternative within the Dutch academic publishing landscape.

The grant also supports the development of a coherent, inclusive, and efficient ecosystem for diamond open access publishing – open access without costs for either readers or authors. The NUPs are working on this by establishing thematic working groups, offering training and mentorship, and developing a central learning hub. Shared editorial and metadata services will also be set up, alongside a joint communication strategy and catalogue to increase the visibility of publications. The network will furthermore actively promote non-profit open access models at both national and international levels.
