- Subject: [IP-OA_Forum] Wondering what’s happening at OASPA 2025?
Join us at OASPA2025 (September 22-24, Irish College Leuven, Belgium) as we tackle the defining challenge of our time: What will it take to reach 100% open access?
Secure your place now and save and join representatives from over 100 organisations already registered!
Over the next few weeks we will showcase in a little more detail the sessions we have lined up. Today, we delve into three of the panels we have planned.
Open access of what, for what, and why?
Chair: Charles Watkinson (University of Michigan Press)
Panellists:
Chérifa Boukacem-Zeghmouri (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1)
Sam Moore (Radical Open Access)
Antia Wiersma (Royal Netherlands Historical Society)
John Wilkin (Lyrasis)
What should we remember as we strive for more open access? There are numerous competing priorities. Do OA advocates sometimes run counter to helpful progress? When and where does the OA movement get under its own feet? In the face of criticisms of open access, are we thinking widely or boldly enough? This panel will bring a variety of views, with nuanced consideration around 100% open access. Whether you are on the fence about open access or committed to the cause, join us for a panel about building a more complete and evolved open-publishing agenda.
The library at the heart of the open access transition
Chair: Ros Pyne (Bloomsbury)
Panellists:
Anne Houston (Swarthmore College Libraries & Lever Press)
Danny Kingsley (Deakin University)
Madhan Muthukumaraswamy (Jindal Global University)
Arjan Schalken (UKB)
This panel will draw on both the overall conference theme and the interactive session on unsolved problems in OA, viewed from the library perspective. How are libraries responding to old challenges and new issues as they consider their vital support of OA? Where have libraries been able to make the most impact in navigating a path to 100% OA? And where are they finding the most fruitful collaborations? With views from libraries across world regions, the panel will examine research integrity challenges, rights retention, the role of institutional repositories, library-led publishing, and the changing role of the library.
Scaling inclusive models in open access
Chair: Kamran Naim (CERN & EOSC)
Panellists:
Juan Pablo Alperin (Public Knowledge Project)
Caroline Edwards (Open Library of Humanities & Open Journals Collective)
Lauren Kane (BioOne)
Kate McCready (Big Ten Academic Alliance & JSTOR Path to Open)
How do we deliver, maintain and scale open access without author-facing fees? Is collective action always the answer, and does it always look the same? What do we mean when we say something is 'diamond'? Are there other types of partnerships and ways of financing operations that are successful? Spanning the sciences and the humanities, journals and books, and considering open infrastructure across continents, this will be an honest and thought-provoking look at sustaining more inclusive models for open access, at scale.
