Liebe Kolleg*innen,

Dear Madam/Sir,

Following a call for evidence, a public consultation for the upcoming European Research Area (ERA) Act is now open for feedback until 5 January 2026.

The ERA Act will be an opportunity to ensure the ‘fifth freedom’, the free circulation of researchers, scientific knowledge and technology in the EU’s single market. The aim of the public consultation is to collect general evidence on the problems facing the development and full achievement of the European Research Area, along with stakeholders’ views on feasible solutions that could be supported by legislation at EU level.

The consultation’s questionnaire is structured around the key challenges that the ERA Act aims to address and on potential solutions to tackle them by means of EU-level legislation. Notably, one of the questionnaire’s sections concerns the free circulation of researchers and scientific knowledge: researchers’ careers and mobility; free circulation of scientific knowledge; European research infrastructure consortia; knowledge valorisation.

We invite you to:

·                    Provide your feedback on the key challenges and potential solutions, and

·                    help spread the word by sharing the news about this public consultation within your networks to help ensure broad awareness and feedback.
