Reasoning Without Sources: Generative AI, Open Data, and the Future of Provenance
Speaker: Pierre-Carl Langlais, pleias.ai
Generative AI reasons fluently with the scholarly record — and does not cite what it has been trained on. What erodes is not just attribution but the lineage of ideas: the chain of custody that makes knowledge accountable and cumulative. This talk argues that provenance is a governance question — who governs the knowledge commons, and for whom — that licensing alone cannot answer. Yet the same disintermediation creates an opening: with openly licensed, documented corpora, attribution can be built into AI's infrastructure rather than litigated after the fact. That requires open access, open data, and open source communities to build it together.
Open Innovation in the AI moment - stress-testing for publicness

In the digital age, the free flow of knowledge is seen as integral to flourishing economies and societies. Conceptual work on governing open innovation ecosystems shows the need for building in reciprocity and disincentivising opportunistic enclosure in order to enable accessibility and new innovation. The FOSS and open data movements have delved into the frictions and conditions that bound openness, including, social licensing frameworks, and attention to diversity and equity in participation cultures.
How do we extend these learnings to the AI moment? The proposed talk unpacks open AI innovation to argue that open AI is paradoxically caught in a ‘law of diminishing publicness’. The talk makes the case for revisiting AI openness, arguing how tech capitalism’s narrative arbitrage about inter-operability, frictionless data flows, localisation, and trust displaces discussions about knowledge plurality and publicness. It submits that moving from open to regenerative innovation is to bridge the distance between reified infrastructures and tethered publics. It concludes with a call for the university as the steward of knowledge society to embrace methods capable of producing the becoming publics of real innovation.
