Dear Students, Colleagues, and Faculty,
you are all invited to participate in the first Alt-Right Roundtable at the JFK-Institute. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, Nov 28, from 14-16h in Room 203. At this roundtable, Simon Strick will present and discuss his current research into the online-based Alt-Right, and their affective and identitarian strategies.
The Roundtable provides a space of discussion, where all participants can debate the role and threat of the Alt-Right, its impact on American Studies and American culture, and the general cultural and political climate.
All participants are welcome to participate in the format, with their experiences, questions, and ideas for countermeasures. Each Rountable (of which three are planned until Summer 2019) will feature a guest speaker, a short presentation, and an open exchange after that.
At the First Roundtable, Dr. Simon Strick will introduce his research project, with Prof. Diane Negra (UCD) as discussant.
Please pass on this invitation to students in your courses and to anyone who might be interested.
*** Project Description Funded by the VW-Stiftung, Simon Strick's project Feeling (Alt)Right: Affective and Identitarian Strategies of Online Extremism collects and analyses current right-wing, white nationalist, anti-feminist and anti-left discourses on the internet. Particular focus is laid on social media platforms like Youtube, Reddit, and 4Chan. The projects main thesis is that the Alt-Right (short for 'alternative right') enforces a large-scale culture war and a disruption of political and discursive climates. Employing strategies of transgression, identitarianism, disinformation, and affective identification, the Alt-Right constitutes a fundamentally transformed right-wing extremism influencing large parts of popular, political, and online culture. More affect than ideology, and more amorphous network than coordinated movement, the Alt-Right presents a radical challenge for open societies, and the humanities in particular.
