"Worlds of Literature - Competing Notions of the Global"

 

With its first annual meeting, the Cluster of Excellence "Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective" turns to the question of how competing notions of the global have affected and continue to affect debates about 'world literature' and matters of transnational literary canonization. As the cluster assumes that literature becomes global through its temporal entanglements, its annual meeting seeks to reflect and expand upon established theories of world literature by drawing on spatiotemporal networks of literary communities and their interaction with other arts and media. Accordingly, the conference brings together scholars from the humanities and the social sciences to debate and contrast different theoretical and methodological framings of globality, cosmopolitanism, and competing cultural conceptions of mundanity across world history.

In seiner ersten Jahrestagung widmet sich der Exzellenzcluster "Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective" der Frage, wie sich konkurrierende Vorstellungen des Globalen auf Debatten über ,Weltliteratur' und Fragen transnationaler literarischer Kanonisierung ausgewirkt haben und weiterhin auswirken. Ausgehend von der Idee, dass Literatur überhaupt erst durch ihre temporalen Verflechtungen global wird, strebt die Jahrestagung an, etablierte Theorien zur Weltliteratur zu reflektieren und zu erweitern, indem sie den Fokus auf raum-zeitliche Netzwerke literarischer Gemeinschaften und deren Interaktion mit anderen Künsten und Medien legt. Dementsprechend bringt die Konferenz Wissenschaftler*innen aus den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften zusammen, um unterschiedliche theoretische und methodische Rahmungen von Globalität, Kosmopolitismus und konkurrierenden kulturellen Vorstellungen von Weltlichkeit zu diskutieren und einander gegenüberzustellen.
