Branko Milanović presents his new book Capitalism, Alone: The Future of the System That Rules the World
16 January 2020 - 15:00 CET
Branko Milanović joins the GLOBE Webinar Series to discuss his new book "Capitalism, Alone: The Future of the System That Rules the World" (2019, Belknap Press). After the
presentation of the book, Pablo Astorga, senior research fellow at Institut Barcelona D'Estudis Internacionals, will offer some reflections on the book to start off the discussion.
About the book: For the first time in human history, the globe is dominated by one economic system. In Capitalism, Alone, Branko Milanović explains the reasons for this decisive historical shift since
the days of feudalism and, later, communism. Surveying the varieties of capitalism, he asks: What are the prospects for a fairer world now that capitalism is the only game in town? His conclusions are sobering, but not fatalistic. Capitalism gets much wrong,
but also much right—and it is not going anywhere. Our task is to improve it.
About the author: Branko Milanović is Visiting Presidential Professor and Core Faculty at the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He was formerly
Lead Economist in the World Bank’s research department. His books include Global Inequality and The Haves and the Have-Nots: A Brief and Idiosyncratic History of Global Inequality.
Discussant: Pablo Astorga (Institut Barcelona D'Estudis Internacionals)
Moderator: Kari Otteburn (Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies)
Participation is free and the webinar can be joined from anywhere in the world.

ABOUT GLOBE
Funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme,
GLOBE (‘Global Governance and the European Union: Future Trends and Scenarios’) seeks to understand the constraints and opportunities for the European Union in promoting its interests
and values through global governance. The project will first provide an analytical grip on the state of play in global governance with specific attention to four key areas –
trade and development,
security and migration,
climate change and
global finance – in order to identify the major roadblocks to effective and coherent global governance by multiple stakeholders in a multipolar world. GLOBE will then look ahead to 2030
and 2050, identifying possible scenarios in order to equip policymakers with the tools they will need to deal with future challenges and make the EU a more effective and legitimate actor in global governance.
