Dear JFKI community,
We are delighted to invite you to this year’s international graduate conference organized by the 2022 GSNAS cohort, which will explore the theme
We the People?
Perspectives on Crises, Conflicts and Social Movements in North America and Beyond
The conference will take place on June 15, 2023 in room 340 of the JFKI.
We have dedicated the conference to exploring perspectives on contemporary crises, movements, and opportunities in the United States and Canada, as well as beyond. As a vanguard of globalized capitalist democracies, nations, and communities in North America
find themselves at the forefront of the culminating polycrisis shaping our time. Amidst a period of tumultuousness that has raised concerns about the health of democracy, it is vital for us to understand the factors of change. From the ongoing pandemic and
the looming climate catastrophe to the widespread movements for social justice, the dynamics of change are deeply intertwined and interconnected globally. We have curated a diverse range of multidisciplinary contributions that address the challenges and chances
of our time.
The highlight of our conference will be the keynote address by Eric P. Schwartz, titled
"Human Rights, Migration, and the U.S. Southern Border - A Practitioner's View on Advocacy and Transformational versus Incremental Change."
Mr. Schwartz is Professor of Public Affairs at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, Former President of Refugees International and the Former U.S: Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, Migration.
