Hi,
i fixed this and rearranged the string writing procedure to ensure to set the 
right encoding byte.
Also, as my first patch may be hard to reproduce i splitted it into several 
parts.
Just apply them one after another rigth after applying martens patch.
So you do not have to merge the code manually.
