I can download LP4 and LP2 tracks in atrac formats into my computer. But the upgraded Platinum-MD seems a bit unstable. After I successfully downloaded one track, when I tried to download more, the software just hung there. I have to unplug and replug everything and re-do the whole process again. Hi Jan = and all,

I uninstalled my previous Platinum-MD and reins= talled everything following this (https://= github.com/.../platinum-md/releases/tag/v1.0.0-RC1) and this (https://github.com/gavin= benda/platinum-md#osx).=C2=A0
I can download LP4 and LP2 trac= ks in atrac formats into my computer. But the upgraded Platinum-MD seems a = bit unstable. After I successfully downloaded one track, when I tried to do= wnload more, the software just hung there. I have to unplug and replug ever= ything=C2=A0and re-do the whole process again.=C2=A0
But the upgr= aded Platinum-MD seems a good starting point!

At least with "netmd/upload.py=E2=80=9D in the repo, the original = ATRAC-encoded audio data will be kept intact, SP (mono/stereo) tracks = will be put into an .aea file, and LP2/LP4 aka ATRAC3 will be put into a = .wav container =E2=80=94 however, the audio in the wav will still be the = ATRAC3-encoded data, so there=E2=80=99s no generational loss (you can = check with =E2=80=9Cffprobe=E2=80=9D from ffmpeg or the =E2=80=9CCodec = Information=E2=80=9D dialog in VLC). For this reason, the .aea and .wav = files will only be playable by tools that support the ATRAC3 codecs = (e.g. ffmpeg or VLC come to mind). Alternatively, you can copy those tracks also with SonicStage, which = IIRC will put them in an OMA container format, but that should also not = do any conversion, but just contain the original audio data(?). = Doesn=E2=80=99t hurt to store both variants in case one turns out to be = better than the other (for archival purposes). SonicStage and the MZ-RH1 = driver still work in 64-bit Windows 10, but it does need some hunting of = the right files and unsigned driver installation, etc.. =E2=80=94 but = good enough for a one-off archival operation. As far as I understand, for non-Hi-MD-formatted disks, there=E2=80=99s = no real container/wrapper that can be transferred from the disk, but the = data that you get in the .aea or .wav files is definitely as = =E2=80=9Cbit-to-bit=E2=80=9D as you can get with an MZ-RH1. For Hi-MD formatted disks (ATRAC3plus: Hi-SP/Hi-LP/PCM), you can create = a disk image of the filesystem or just copy the folder and then access = the files via Hi-MD tools for preservation/archival (this worked at = least for analog/microphone recordings done with an MZ-RH1, not sure if = recordings from other Hi-MD recorders have any additional protection). Once you have a bit-by-bit copy of the encoded ATRAC/3/3plus data, I=E2=80= =99d still recommend storing an additional copy of those files in more = broadly available formats (PCM WAV/FLAC/MP3) just so that the archived = data is more easily accessible and does not rely on libhimd/ffmpeg for = extracting/decoding the audio data (definitely store a copy of the = source and binaries of all tools/codecs it needs with the ATRAC-encoded = =E2=80=9Coriginal=E2=80=9D data, as you will need those to access the = data at all). And by converting it to FLAC once, there=E2=80=99s no = generational loss, while still keeping it in a well-documented, = widely-implemented format (I personally even went with MP3 for the = =E2=80=9Caccessible=E2=80=9D format and accepting generational loss, = because it=E2=80=99s good enough and practical, and I also have an = archival copy of the ATRAC-encoded audio should I ever feel the need to = re-convert it). I double checked the technical metadata of the .aea, .wav, .at3, .oma, and .pcm files in MediaInfo, FFprobe and ExifTool. I do get what you mentioned - the unconverted atrac codec. It is tricky though some codecs are recognizable to MediaInfo while some are only readable by FFprobe. Thank you so much. Hi Thomas,

Your clarification really he= lps!=C2=A0

I double checked the technical metadata= of the .aea, .wav, .at3, .oma, and .pcm files in MediaInfo, FFprobe and Ex= ifTool. I do get what you mentioned - the unconverted atrac codec. It is tr= icky though some codecs are recognizable to MediaInfo while some are only r= eadable by FFprobe.=C2=A0

Thank you so much.

Hi,

Don=E2=80=99t confuse ATRAC3 in a WAV container with the =E2=80=9Cuncompres= sed PCM=E2=80=9D in a WAV container.

At least with "netmd/upload.py=E2=80=9D in the repo, the original ATRA= C-encoded audio data will be kept intact, SP (mono/stereo) tracks will be p= ut into an .aea file, and LP2/LP4 aka ATRAC3 will be put into a .wav contai= ner =E2=80=94 however, the audio in the wav will still be the ATRAC3-encode= d data, so there=E2=80=99s no generational loss (you can check with =E2=80= =9Cffprobe=E2=80=9D from ffmpeg or the =E2=80=9CCodec Information=E2=80=9D = dialog in VLC). For this reason, the .aea and .wav files will only be playa= ble by tools that support the ATRAC3 codecs (e.g. ffmpeg or VLC come to min= d).

Alternatively, you can copy those tracks also with SonicStage, which IIRC w= ill put them in an OMA container format, but that should also not do any co= nversion, but just contain the original audio data(?). Doesn=E2=80=99t hurt= to store both variants in case one turns out to be better than the other (= for archival purposes). SonicStage and the MZ-RH1 driver still work in 64-b= it Windows 10, but it does need some hunting of the right files and unsigne= d driver installation, etc.. =E2=80=94 but good enough for a one-off archiv= al operation.

As far as I understand, for non-Hi-MD-formatted disks, there=E2=80=99s no r= eal container/wrapper that can be transferred from the disk, but the data t= hat you get in the .aea or .wav files is definitely as =E2=80=9Cbit-to-bit= =E2=80=9D as you can get with an MZ-RH1.

For Hi-MD formatted disks (ATRAC3plus: Hi-SP/Hi-LP/PCM), you can create a d= isk image of the filesystem or just copy the folder and then access the fil= es via Hi-MD tools for preservation/archival (this worked at least for anal= og/microphone recordings done with an MZ-RH1, not sure if recordings from o= ther Hi-MD recorders have any additional protection).

Once you have a bit-by-bit copy of the encoded ATRAC/3/3plus data, I=E2=80= =99d still recommend storing an additional copy of those files in more broa= dly available formats (PCM WAV/FLAC/MP3) just so that the archived data is = more easily accessible and does not rely on libhimd/ffmpeg for extracting/d= ecoding the audio data (definitely store a copy of the source and binaries = of all tools/codecs it needs with the ATRAC-encoded =E2=80=9Coriginal=E2=80= =9D data, as you will need those to access the data at all). And by convert= ing it to FLAC once, there=E2=80=99s no generational loss, while still keep= ing it in a well-documented, widely-implemented format (I personally even w= ent with MP3 for the =E2=80=9Caccessible=E2=80=9D format and accepting gene= rational loss, because it=E2=80=99s good enough and practical, and I also h= ave an archival copy of the ATRAC-encoded audio should I ever feel the need= to re-convert it).

Thomas
