In today’s world, access to information is a critical factor for the survival, development, and competition for institutions, communities, and citizens. Open access to information becomes a major means to ensure the widest distribution of information and public rights of access to knowledge. As the newest one of the Berlin Open Access Conferences, Berlin 8 aims to share and explore the strategies, policies, implementation approaches, supporting mechanisms, and international collaborative efforts, for open access, by governmental and funding agencies, research and educational institutions, scholarly communications agencies, libraries, and open access researchers and practitioners, among others.

As the first Berlin Open Access Conference to be held outside the European continent, Berlin 8 hopes to attract the newcomers of open access in emerging and developing countries, as well as veterans of open access from Europe, North America, and other countries.
