Dear Klaus,
Indeed, the greater expected audiences of publications in Open Access can remain largely theoretical, also due to the social, cultural barriers you have described. Besides economic barriers, non-electronic, physical formats can also require affiliation, building access during opening hours and other preconditions for access to knowledge. On the whole, the emergence of Open Access is critically dependent on the evolution of globalization-related digitization, communication and computer technologies in recent decades, which also simultaneously affects how science is being consumed and produced. As channels for scientific knowledge communication, publication models can also, thus, be assumed to undergo multiple, more or less interrelated changes that need to be better understood and by any means are not exhausted by the distinction between open access and closed access.
Best regards,
Pablo

Dear Pablo,
You are right when you consider publication as distribution of information or entertainment which is mainly access to knowledge. However, if you want to distribute understanding, it differs. Understanding requires more or less the same level of knowledge between sender and receiver, for example the same language (or in electronic media access to standardized context, which limits useful access and distribution because of limited ability of potential receivers (narrow band width). Paper printed journals assure to some degree the same standards / specialization. This is not an argument against OAJ, in contrast it opens new doors to really understand electronic publication / communication. It is the goal that defines the best selection of a tool or action.
Best regards,
Klaus

Dear Klaus,
It seems that for all intents and purposes the degree to which scientific knowledge can be considered to be a divisible or public good is limited by the reproducibility of its distribution media. Printed form inherently imposes access limitations, such as to scholarly journal issues, in addition to cost structures that are likely to be heavier than those for digital editions. While preprints can be costlessly reproduced and Open Access licensed, their hosting platforms will likely need sustainable financing models to enable their continued independent existence.
Best regards,
Pablo

Dear all,
This is mainly a question of the paper’s quality and impact of the journal. The most important journals in natural sciences are still paper printed and possess a much higher impact factor (for example ‘nature’ and related journals). Electronic publication / information exchange possesses its own characteristics which ae not necessary associated with quality. It opens doors of knowledge by closing doors of understanding.
Best regards,
Klaus Kayser.

Dear All:
Open Access articles can be expected to receive more citations than either closed- or free-access papers, because they undergo academic editing, receive peer feedback and present finalized conclusions without access restrictions: https://openresearch.community/posts/preprints-publishing-models-and-citation-advantage.
