Dear colleagues and students, , We warmly invite you to our next session in our lecture series Loss in the Land of Plenty: Understanding American Crisis, Decline, and Paths to Renewal: Tomorrow, December 17 at 6 pm Arlie Russell Hochschild will give a talk entitled “Loss, Shame, and the Right’s Narrative of Stolen Pride.” Arlie Russell Hochschild is an internationally renowned sociologist and an emerita professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Her work has long focused on the human emotions
that underlie moral beliefs, social practices, and social life more broadly. She is the author of ten books, including Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right (The New Press, September 10, 2024). The book explores life in a struggling Appalachian
town and examines the political appeal of claims to undeservedly lost pride. It was selected by Barack Obama as one of his ten “favorite books of 2024.” Please note
that this talk will be held online and at a different time than usual. You will find the link below. Best, Lora Anne Viola and Stefanie Müller Meeting link: Meeting number: Meeting password: Join from a video system or application
