I retested with the Sharp IM-MT899. It still works, but awfully slow,
because the timing is "unfortunate". I have to submit a fix for that.

If "netmdcli -t" provides no extra output, this indicates the test for
readiness of the first USB transaction already fails. This is not
expected for devices adhering to the NetMD protocol. According to
Internet sources, this device is meant to be NetMD compliant.

Do you have the possibility to get a USB dump of connecting the player
to Sonic Stage (or some Sharp music transfer software) in Windows?

You could use "Snoopy Pro" for example to get a USB trace.
