we would like to cordially invite you to our next Webex-online-colloquium on the arts of Africa on Tuesday, April 27 at 6:15 p.m. (18:15). Our guest will be Professor Walter E. A. van Beek from the University of Leiden. He will give a short introduction to his documentary "An African King" (1990 - 40 min.), which investigates the illicit art trade in historical terra-cotta sculptures from the inland Niger delta in Mali. We often somewhat simplistically forget and ignore that the plunder of Africa's cultural heritage was by no means only a phenomenon of the colonial times, but continues into the very present. This also has ethical implications for our own scholarly research. Are we not - at least indirectly - supporting the illicit art trade, if we continue to publish photographs of un-provenanced objects from private and museum collections? Is a research and publication moratorium an effective response? We attach a recent debate on the issue from the journal African Arts (Winter 2020) which could serve as background for the discussion of Walter van Beek's film.
