I just checked. Our tool netmdcli, as we publish it at the moment, does
not support transfer from pcm to a netMD unit without being patched. The
same applies to downloadhack (an old proof-of-concept).

If the software gets improved to allow that kind of transfer, I am very
confident it yields the same quality as an SPDIF transfer, as in both
cases the encoding from PCM to SP is performed by the recorder, so most
likely the same encoder.
